The geolocation company conducted more than 5.3 million geolocation checks in North Carolina during the first 48 hours of legal mobile sports betting.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, Virginia\u2019s online sports betting market recorded slightly more than 2 million geolocation checks. Virginia has been live with sports betting since January 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p><strong>It\u2019s early, but North Carolina is already delivering on lawmaker expectations when they legalized sports betting last year,\u201d<\/strong> said GeoComply SVP of Compliance Lindsay Slader. <strong>\u201cThe state\u2019s well-structured approach to mobile sports betting safeguards consumers and opens up significant revenue streams. With March Madness around the corner, we are excited to see continued growth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The NCAA tournament is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/espn-bet-could-get-a-boost-from-north-carolina-entry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most wagered-on events<\/a> in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another metric showing North Carolina emerging as a competitor to neighboring Virginia\u2019s online sports market. That\u2019s the nearly 370K active online sports betting accounts created in the first two days, compared to Virginia\u2019s 134K active sports betting accounts.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SportsBooks_in_Full_Court_Press\"><\/span>SportsBooks in Full Court Press<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>North Carolina became the 30<sup>th<\/sup> state, in addition to Washington, D.C., to offer online sports betting, and sportsbooks were ready. As reported previously by <em>Casino.org<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/north-carolina-sportsbooks-open-as-state-readies-online-launch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eight sportsbook operators<\/a> began registering players on March 1.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the sportsbook operators paid a $1 million licensing fee.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p><strong>Expect this to be the most-bet March Madness in BetMGM history,\u201d<\/strong> said John Ewing, BetMGM\u2019s PR manager.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The University of North Carolina was the most-bet team to win March Madness during the first 24 hours of online sports betting in the Tar Heel State, according to BetMGM. The first bet in North Carolina history was placed by a person who bet $100 on UNC to win the tournament.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>While basketball is a motivating factor behind North Carolina\u2019s sports betting initiative, the state\u2019s governor had different ideas. Gov.
