(Image: Penn Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pennsylvania-based regional gaming specialist announced Thursday that 10 additional casinos it operates will see their sportsbooks become ESPN Bet locations in the coming days and weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ESPN Bet is coming to Ameristar Casino Hotel Council Bluffs in Iowa, Pennsylvania\u2019s three Hollywood casinos in Grantville, York, and Washington, the two Hollywood Gaming racinos in Ohio\u2019s Youngstown and Dayton, Ameristar Casino Black Hawk in Colorado, Ameristar East Chicago and Hollywood Lawrenceburg in Indiana, and Hollywood Casino Charles Town in West Virginia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The forthcoming ESPN Bet facilities join ESPN Bet sportsbooks already operating in Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, and Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Market_Gains\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Market Gains<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u201cofficial sportsbook of <i>ESPN<\/i>,\u201d Penn Entertainment says the partnership allows the gaming firm to combine <i>ESPN\u2019s <\/i>\u201cindustry-leading brand and multiplatform reach with Penn\u2019s deep sportsbook operational expertise.\u201d ESPN Bet is available online in 19 states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hollywood Casino York, a so-called \u201cmini-casino\u201d in Pennsylvania, will debut its ESPN Bet facility this Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 pm ahead of the kickoff of the NFL playoffs. The sportsbook in York County is one of many in the Penn portfolio that was previously known as Barstool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Penn Entertainment first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/casino-mergers-and-acquisitions-could-surge-in-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">invested<\/a> in Dave Portnoy\u2019s Barstool Sports in early 2020 with $163 million for a 36% position. The casino company paid another $364 million in February 2023 to acquire the remaining 64% stake.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Penn\u2019s plan to appeal to young men and turn them into sports bettors by leveraging Portnoy and Barstool\u2019s social media reach turned out to be a losing wager after many state regulators raised concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/portnoy-reveals-barstool-sports-draftkings-deal-after-super-bowl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Portnoy\u2019s<\/a> suitability to be involved in a licensed gaming operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe got denied licenses because of me,\u201d Portnoy conceded after Penn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/barstool-sports-layoffs-begin-after-dave-portnoy-resumes-control\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sold him back Barstool<\/a> for just a dollar. \u201cWe underestimated just how tough it is for myself and Barstool to operate in a regulated world where gambling regulators and <i>Die<\/i> <i>New York Times<\/i> and <i>Business Insider<\/i> write hit pieces.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Penn continues to try and increase its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/espn-bet-fanatics-making-inroads-with-key-demographics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sports betting market share<\/a> after the Barstool fiasco put it behind the eight ball. Gaming research firm Eilers &#038; Krejcik estimates that ESPN Bet controls only about 3-4% of the legal sports betting industry. FanDuel and DraftKings account for about 74%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"><i>ESPN <\/i>integrating ESPN Bet odds into its daily programming has boosted Penn\u2019s sports betting hold. <i>ESPN <\/i>also allows its customers to link their online accounts to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/penn-entertainment-details-strategy-strengthen-espn-bet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN Bet mobile app<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBringing this new feature to market is an important step towards creating an industry-leading personalized sports betting experience across the <i>ESPN<\/i> ecosystem,\u201d Penn Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden said during an earnings call in November. \u201cThis will help to further drive monetization through enhanced engagement, retention, and reactivation.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"William_Hill_Partnership\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>William Hill Partnership<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Penn Entertainment first rolled out sports betting at its physical casinos in 2018, the sports wagering facilities were rather generic and bland. At the time, Penn had contracted William Hill, one of the oldest bookmakers in the United Kingdom, to run its sports betting facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Caesars Entertainment acquired William Hill in April 2021 after Penn had bet big on Barstool.
