(Image: NBA.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The American athlete was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/nba-gives-jontay-porter-lifetime-ban-for-sports-betting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned for life<\/a> by the league in April for \u201cspot fixing\u201d and leaking insider information to a New York-based gambling syndicate<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>US federal prosecutors claim the group placed bets on Porter to underperform in a January 26 game against the Los Angeles Clippers and a March 20 game against the\u00a0Sacramento Kings, both losses for the Raptors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This was done with the knowledge that Porter would exit early from each game claiming injury, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"_What_is_Spot_Fixing\"><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What is Spot Fixing?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spot fixing refers not to the manipulation of the outcome of a game, which would involve a conspiracy of multiple players, but to one small aspect of the game, which requires the participation of just one player. This could involve the number of yellow cards or throw-ins that might a occur in a soccer game, for example. Or, in this case, a single player\u2019s performance in two basketball games.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>The group would have won US$1,272,875 from betting the under on Porter via DraftKings and FanDuel. The lion\u2019s share of those winnings was frozen by the operators when they detected suspicious betting patterns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Four members of the New York betting syndicate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/jontay-porter-scandal-fourth-man-arrested-in-nba-spot-fixing-probe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been arrested<\/a> by federal authorities, one while apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/new-yorker-arrested-in-nba-betting-case-was-trying-to-flee-to-australia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attempting to flee the US.<\/a> They face wire fraud charges that come with a maximum 20-year sentence if convicted.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porter_Owed_Debts_to_Gang\"><\/span><strong>Porter Owed Debts to Gang<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It was unclear whether Porter would also face charges. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) told <em>ESPN<\/em> that a criminal investigation is warranted.<\/p>\n<p>US Federal prosecutors believe Porter agreed to the scheme because he had amassed large gambling debts to the group, and this was his way out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Court documents show Porter was in contact with co-conspirators via a Telegram messaging group where details of the scheme were discussed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On April 4, the day Porter received the NBA ban, he told the group that they \u201cmight just get hit w a rico\u201d \u2013 a reference to federal anti-racketeering charges.
