It recently acquired Great Canadian Gaming Corp. (GCGC) and is working with VICI Properties (NYSE:VICI) to purchase the Venetian and Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas for $6.25 billion. Last December, Apollo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/igt-selling-italy-gaming-machines-sports-betting-units-for-1-15-billion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paid $1.15 billion<\/a> to International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT) for Gamenet Group S.p.A \u2014 an Italian digital gaming, gaming machine, and sports wagering operator.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p>As part of its effort to get the Tabcorp deal done, Apollo offered $500 million for the Australian company\u2019s gaming services unit. It\u2019s a business that wasn\u2019t initially part of a strategic review launched by the operator. MST Maquee gaming analyst Rohan Sundram called that move an \u201cadded sweetener\u201d on the suitor\u2019s part.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Without that component, Apollo\u2019s offer merely matches a revised bid of $2.7 billion from Entain Plc (OTC:GMVHY) for Tabcorp\u2019s media and sportsbook arms.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_Apollos_Tabcorp_Ambitions_Complications_Abound\"><\/span>For Apollo\u2019s Tabcorp Ambitions, Complications Abound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An array of regulatory issues in Australia could weigh on Apollo\u2019s efforts to win what are viewed as plum assets from Tabcorp.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p>The likely existence of change of control provisions amongst [Tabcorp\u2019s] multiple agreements with various racing bodies\u2026 further complicate an already complicated matter and would take some time to negotiate through,\u201d said MST\u2019s Sundram in an interview with the <i>Sydney Morning Herald<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s not immediately clear if Australian regulators have a preference for a company with a local footprint to buy businesses from Tabcorp. But if that\u2019s the case, Apolllo could be hamstrung. Entain, which already operates in the country, publicly made a bid, while Rupert Murdoch\u2019s Fox Corp. (NASDAQ:FOXA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/apollo-revises-bid-for-tabcorp-betting-media-units\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is considering an offer<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Various state racing bodies throughout the country will need to approve any divestment by Tabcorp. With Entain already licensed in the country and Fox having deep ties there, either could be seen as a preferred buyer over Apollo in the eyes of regulators.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Evans and Partners analyst James Fuller told the <i>Herald <\/i>that Apollo lacks global and local sports wagering operations, and that could hinder its run at Tabcorp. Conversely, Entain is a global sportsbook operator. In addition to its Australian footprint, it\u2019s one of Europe\u2019s largest sports betting companies, and it\u2019s a growing force in the US by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/mgm-entain-merger-speculation-to-continue-lingering-says-analyst\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">way of its 50 percent stake<\/a> in BetMGM.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Apollo_Wants_Sports_Betting_Exposure\"><\/span>Apollo Wants Sports Betting Exposure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What comes of its run at Tabcorp\u2019s media and sports betting businesses remains to be seen.
