(Image: Getty)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maryland was in the minority among the nearly 40 states that permit gambling on sports in allowing bettors to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/massachusetts-regulators-say-betmgm-violated-player-prop\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wagers on a college athlete\u2019s performance<\/a>. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) has confirmed that it amended its sports betting rules to prohibit such wagers. The updated regulation went into effect on March 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMaryland\u2019s sportsbook operators were directed to stop taking college player prop bets,\u201d an MLGCA spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covers.com\/industry\/maryland-ends-college-player-prop-wagering-due-to-harassment-concerns-march-4-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Covers<\/i><\/a>, which first reported the news.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The decision brings Maryland in line with other states that have disallowed these wagers to protect college athletes against potential harassment. The intent is to focus college sports wagers on the teams rather than on the individual athletes,\u201d<\/strong> the state comment added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maryland is home to retail and online sports betting. Retail sportsbooks operate at five of the state\u2019s six brick-and-mortar casinos, and at professional sports stadiums and licensed retail sports betting locations. Marylanders can also access 12 online sportsbooks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Player_Safety\"><\/span><b>Player Safety<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The list of states allowing college player props is now down to just four \u2014 Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, and Wyoming. Washington, D.C., also allows such wagers. Ohio was another state where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/ohio-sports-betting-rules-amended-prohibit-college-player-props\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">college player props were allowed<\/a> until the state\u2019s gaming commission amended its rules last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/north-carolina-sportsbooks-open-as-state-readies-online-launch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sports betting in North Carolina<\/a> is to commence next week on March 11. Currently, the state\u2019s sports betting regulations don\u2019t prohibit individual bets on college athletes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\">NCAA President Charlie Baker is supportive of allowing people to bet on college sports. But he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/ncaa-president-charlie-baker-calls-sports-betting-reforms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no fan of player props<\/a>. He\u2019s repeatedly called on state lawmakers and regulators to ban such bets on claims that those odds threaten student-athlete safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Baker, who signed Massachusetts\u2019 sports betting bill into law while governor, says college player props expose student-athletes to a higher threat level for online abuse. He\u2019s fielded complaints from players, coaches, and university administrators that player props have subjected team personnel to heckling. Baker says prop bets are \u201cone of the parts I worry about the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While player props on college sports are no more in Maryland, most college props regarding teams are still allowed. Sportsbooks can also still offer college player props on season-long awards like the Heisman Trophy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reporting_Tool\"><\/span><b>Reporting Tool<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">During his \u201cState of College Sports\u201d address in January, Baker said a focal point of the college sports organization is strengthening sports betting laws across the country to create a safer playing field. The NCAA has additionally contracted the Signify Group, a data science firm, to leverage its Threat Matrix software.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Threat Matrix is an AI-powered monitoring service that detects and collates abuse and flags serious threats.
