(Image: DraftKings\/YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">In a statement to <em>Casino.org<\/em>, American Gaming Association (AGA) Vice President for Government Relations Chris Cylke said that the bill filed last week by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/congressman-wants-sports-betting-commercials-taken-off-the-air\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Rep. Paul Tonko<\/a>, D-N.Y., would produce some undesired consequences if passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">\u201cAny such effort only serves to reduce awareness for legal options to the benefit of illegal, offshore operators and the detriment of consumers and communities,\u201d Cylke said. \u201cThe proposed legislation would violate well-established free speech protections and undermine the expertise of more than 5,000 state and tribal\u00a0gaming\u00a0regulators across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Tonko filed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/967?s=1&#038;r=2\" class=\"broken_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HR 967<\/a> on Thursday, February 9, saying the sportsbooks that spend billions of dollars to target Americans through the airwaves and online pose a threat to young people vulnerable to influencers and to individuals who have a heightened risk of addictive behaviors. He said he fashioned the bill after legislation that barred cigarette makers from airing commercials more than 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">A draft version of the bill can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/tonko.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/betting_on_our_future_act_bill_text.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">HR 967 has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, on which the eight-term lawmaker is a member. No hearings have been scheduled for Tonko\u2019s bill.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"NewNormal\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AGA_Gaming_Industry_Polices_Itself\"><\/span>AGA: Gaming Industry Polices Itself<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Cylke said that the AGA appreciates Tonko\u2019s interest in responsible gaming and that the association will continue to make that a priority within the industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Responsibility is a foundation of the legal gaming industry, and that includes with advertising,\u201d Cylke said. \u201cIn fact, there\u2019s never been more attention paid or resources invested in responsible gaming and problem gambling resources. This includes our proactive efforts establishing the <a title=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.americangaming.org%2Fmarketingcode%2F&#038;data=05%7C01%7Ccdebaun%40americangaming.org%7C309c709e3be54a96d6d208db0ae7e018%7Cf84bda8bb02a475a9aa9240cc664b1b6%7C0%7C0%7C638115763254233832%7CUn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americangaming.org\/marketingcode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Responsible Marketing Code for Sports Wagering<\/a>, which mandates responsible\u00a0gaming\u00a0message inclusion and imposes restrictions on target audiences, outlets and content.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">A compliance review board oversees the code. That panel is currently led by Becky Harris from the UNLV International Gaming Institute and executives from FanDuel, Hard Rock, MGM Resorts International, Penn Entertainment, and Rush Street Gaming.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"NewNormal\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Group_Wants_Washington_to_Tackle_Illegal_Gambling\"><\/span>Group Wants Washington to Tackle Illegal Gambling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Rather than focus on legal, licensed operators, the AGA has called on Congress and other federal authorities to do more to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/congress-calls-on-justice-department-to-go-after-illegal-sportsbooks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pursue illegal gaming operators<\/a> and block unlicensed offshore sportsbooks and online casinos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NewNormal\">Late last year, an AGA report estimated that the amount of money Americans gamble through offshore operators and unregulated skill machines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/us-gaming-industry-claims-americans-gamble-half-trillion-illegally\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reaches nearly $511 billion each year<\/a>.
