(Image: Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Boston-based sportsbook leader this week wrote a $5 million check to Winning for Missouri Education, the political committee behind Amendment 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">DraftKings\u2019 contribution comes a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/caesars-bankrolling-opposition-missouri-sports-betting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Casino.org <\/i>broke the news<\/a> that Caesars Entertainment is funding the opposition to the sports betting question. Caesars reportedly opposes Amendment 2 because it would allow too many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/draftkings-espn-bet-adding-share-in-michigan-pennsylvania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sportsbook entities<\/a> access into the state that\u2019s home to more than 6.1 million people.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If Amendment 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/missouri-sports-betting-referendum-expected-close\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">receives a simple majority<\/a>, Missouri\u2019s 13 casinos would be allowed retail and online sportsbook privileges. The state\u2019s professional sports stadiums and arenas would also qualify for similar sports wagering opportunities. Two fully mobile skins untethered to a casino or sports venue would additionally be created.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Campaign_Cash\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Campaign Cash<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Caesars Entertainment is bankrolling the sports betting opposition committee called Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment. The company says Amendment 2 was crafted by \u201cout-of-state corporate sponsors\u201d seeking to enrich their operations without having invested in Missouri as it has with its three riverboats \u2014 Isle of Capri in Boonville, Horseshoe St. Louis, and Harrah\u2019s Kansas City. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Caesars has spent $4 million in opposition to Amendment 2. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">DraftKings\u2019 latest $5 million spend follows a $3.5 million check it wrote to Winning for Missouri Education just last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">DraftKings\u2019 primary competitor, FanDuel, has also donated millions of dollars to the pro-Amendment 2 campaign. The committee has raised $16.5 million since January, most of which came from DraftKings and FanDuel.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Amendment 2 is a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment that arose after state lawmakers in Jefferson City failed to compromise on a sports betting bill. State Sen. Denny Hoskins (R-Warrensburg) was blamed for the legislative gridlock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hoskins says he isn\u2019t against sports betting but thinks if the state wants to welcome more gambling, it should do so while creating a regulatory environment for controversial gray games that operate in restaurants, bars, gas stations, and many other small businesses. Hoskins repeatedly filibustered sports betting bills in his chamber demanding that no-chance skill games be included in the legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">State Sen. Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia) said Hoskins\u2019 politicking was unwarranted.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Everybody else around the country\u2019s doing something that we can\u2019t because a few folks want slot machines in gas stations,\u201d Rowden declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Winning for Missouri Education took sports betting into its own hands and canvassed state voters to sign on to the referendum effort. In August, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft\u2019s office announced that enough signatures had been verified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/show-me-the-verdict-missouri-awaits-sports-betting-decision\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legal challenge alleging<\/a> that Ashcroft used an outdated congressional map and that thousands of signatures were erroneously obtained failed, Amendment 2 was approved for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/ozarks-casino-referendum-restored-sports-betting-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">November 5 ballot<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Caesars_Reasons\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Caesars\u2019 Reasons<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Caesars Entertainment is one of only six commercial casino operators in Missouri. The company wants to limit sports betting to those entities and for them to choose which third-party online sportsbooks gain market access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Amendment 2 would allow two sportsbooks to obtain full online wagering concessions without a casino partnership.
