South Carolina isn\u2019t one of them, as the state has maintained its prohibition on nearly all forms of gambling \u2014 its state-run lottery being the lone exception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>South Carolina is one of only two states \u2014 Hawaii being the other \u2014 that does not permit commercial or tribal casinos, charitable gaming, pari-mutuel wagering, racetrack gambling, iGaming, or sports betting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Joe Cunningham, a former US congressman who represented South Carolina, says it\u2019s time for that to change. The 2022 gubernatorial candidate believes the state should legalize and regulate sports betting in order to generate tax revenue from an activity that he says is already going on.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"main-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Let\u2019s be honest \u2014 sports betting is already happening in South Carolina,\u201d<\/strong> Cunningham said prior to Super Bowl LVI. <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s just underground, unregulated, and brings in no tax revenue. Legalizing it simply provides people more freedom while also generating more revenue.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cunningham has proposed legalizing sports betting and using the associated tax money to support public schools.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Betting_on_Sports_Betting\"><\/span><b>Betting on Sports Betting<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cunningham was elected to Congress in 2018 to represent South Carolina\u2019s 1st District. The now 39-year-old was narrowly defeated in 2020 by Republican challenger Nancy Mace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>With his short one-term stint in DC finished, Cunningham is focusing his ambitions on the governor\u2019s office. And the former lawmaker is betting on winning over some voters by way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/south-carolina-horse-racing-betting-supported-by-state-lawmakers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backing sports betting<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt is time to give South Carolinians the same freedom people in 30 other states enjoy,\u201d Cunningham added in a news release. \u201cThis is about freedom. I\u2019m tired of letting North Carolina and Georgia reap the benefits of new industries because South Carolina politicians won\u2019t get out of our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/us-house-passes-bill-ratifying-catawba-tribes-north-carolina-casino\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina allows its tribal casinos<\/a> to take in-person bets on sports, Georgia has not yet moved to authorize such gambling.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Odds_Long\"><\/span><b>Odds Long<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Joe Cunningham is garnering headlines with his public support of sports betting. But his chances of winning in November aren\u2019t exactly strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster (R) is seeking a second full term. McMaster replaced Nikki Haley (R) in 2017 after she ended her governorship early to become the United States ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump. McMaster was elected for a full four-year term the following year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">McMaster is the heavy favorite for South Carolina\u2019s 2022 gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\">No legal sports betting state in the US has yet approved allowing oddsmakers to take action on political outcomes. Betting exchange PredictIt operates lawfully under the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission but hasn\u2019t received enough interest from its political bettors to launch a 2022 gubernatorial market in South Carolina. <i>Real Clear Politics <\/i>has not reported any polling on the upcoming race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The last Democrat to hold the governor\u2019s office in South Carolina was Gov.
