With pandemic concerns greatly easing, and sports betting now live at five of the brick-and-mortar properties, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/maryland-casinos-cap-off-record-revenue-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state gaming market<\/a> is positioned well for a successful \u2014 and possibly unprecedented \u2014 summer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MGM_Live_Dominate\"><\/span><b>MGM, Live! Dominate<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">MGM National Harbor and Live! Casino &#038; Hotel Maryland continue to maintain their market dominance in the Old Line State. The MGM Resorts casino outside DC won almost $76 million from its patrons last month. The Cordish Companies\u2019 flagship gaming property kept $62.7 million of the bets wagered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The two casinos\u2019 combined GGR of $138.7 million accounted for almost 77% of the state market in May. Caesars Entertainment\u2019s Horseshoe Baltimore was a distant third at $17.6 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maryland\u2019s three resort-style casinos \u2014 Ocean Downs in Berlin, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Rocky Gap Resort \u2014 won the remaining $22.4 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>May had a favorable year-over-year comparison, as the casinos remained limited to operating at 50% capacity during May 2021. The state and host cities, however, allowed the gaming properties to return to operating at their full fire code capacities by June.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Horseshoe\u2019s struggles continued in May \u201922, as the Baltimore property saw GGR decline more than 9% from May 2021. Though MGM National Harbor and Live! Maryland are seeing visitor numbers increase as the summer months arrive, the downtown Baltimore casino\u2019s location is in an undesirable part of Charm City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Caesars is spending heavily to improve and revitalize the corridor between its Horseshoe property and the nearby NFL and MLB professional sports venues M&#038;T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sports_Betting_Update\"><\/span><b>Sports Betting Update<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maryland sports betting went live at each casino sans Rocky Gap in December. But the expanded gaming isn\u2019t expected to provide substantial gaming and associated tax revenue until online operations are permitted to begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The path to authorizing mobile sportsbooks in Maryland is complex because of the law\u2019s minority requirement that allows certain small businesses to seek entry into the online wagering market. The Maryland Sports Wagering and Application Review Committee (SWARC) continues to await the results of its commissioned disparity study that will assist the agency in determining which applicants are awarded mobile sports betting privileges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<p class=\"p1\">Maryland casinos are ready to commence their online sportsbooks once given the go-ahead. The gaming industry is pleading with state officials to allow such operations to begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/maryland-online-sports-betting-delay-linger-into-nfl-season\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in time for the 2022-23 NFL season.<\/a> But the odds of that happening lengthen with each passing day.
